Ambassadors for Hunger
April is here! The Eggs will be ending their service this month to the Albumen Breakfast Stop. Benedict grew personally through this experience. And - he's not done helping Sonny yet!
Reflecting and Action
The next week the Eggs spent one morning reflecting on their service to the ABS. "We were sure able to meet and serve some great people," remarked Benedict. He then asked if they could put on a school-wide drive to collect food for the ABS. "You know, like we did with Operation Egg-Equip." Ms. Poach and the others thought it was a fantastic idea.
The drive was a huge success - the students and their parents filled so many food boxes, one classroom could not hold it all. Mr. Crackle sent over a truck to pick it all up. He was so pleased with the Eggs' efforts. "You are AMAZING ambassadors!"
Helping Sonny
The first game of the season was here. Sonny had been practicing with the Eggs but he kept dropping the ball. "I'm no good, Benedict. I'm going to let you down," he said sadly. Benedict knew he had to find a way to help Sonny gain confidence.
Benedict gave Sonny his own sunglasses and some good advice. "Squeeze hard when the ball hits your mitt." And that's just what happened - the last ball was hit to Sonny. He looked confidently through his new sunglasses and was able to follow the ball. It came to his mitt and he remembered Benedict's words to squeeze hard! It worked! He got the last out and the Eggs won their first game of the season!

Connection to the World
The Eggs were in touch with Sami from Egypt and Yosef from Israel. They told them all about the ABS and the food drive they organized at school. Sami and Yosef were going to hold their own food drives in their communities and bring awareness to the problem of hunger in their own countries. Ms. Poach was very proud to hear this.
Family Activity
Hunger in children is especially problematic. Because they are still developing physically, psychologically, and cognitively, hunger can have negative long-term effects on a child’s growth and development. This is an important conversation to have with children who are not challenged by hunger and an even more important conversation to have with a child you suspect suffers from lack of proper nutrition.
An additional problem the hungry face is getting nutritional food. Too often the food the hungry are able to obtain lacks nutritional balance. Nutritional awareness in the home and the classroom is important for all children to know. In the end, everybody can do something to help end hunger.
If you are able, try organizing a food drive at your children's school. Choose a local food bank to receive the goods.
Look up foods that contain nutrition. Discuss why our bodies need the proper nutrition and how that can affect those who do not get nutritional food.
Thank you for bringing awareness to your children about the issue of hunger, not only in our own communities, but throughout the world.
Next month, we will move on to another service project!
Wishing you all GOOD things,
Sandy
